Description

Mask of Chwibari (the prodigal) character. Round and red with gold dotted face. Face has protruding green and gold eyebrows, white eyes outlined in black dots with circular cut-outs, large bulbous nose and cheek bones, and a curved red mouth. Strand of hair-like fibre curls down from the top of the head. Green cloth covering and ties are attached to the back of the mask and hang down. Mask backing is yellow and has a white label with printed red characters to one side.

Specific Techniques

First the gourd masks were carved, then three layers of paper mache were applied, then they were painted.

Narrative

This set of masks were made in Canada after Mr. Han immigrated, but his family brought him the traditional materials to make the masks from Korea.

Iconographic Meaning

Chwibari is a servant of the Buddhist temple. He used to cook and clean for his master Nojang, but later he drives out his master when he realizes his master has had an affair with Somu. Eventually he has a baby boy with Somu.
