Description

Mask of a stylized buffalo head. Slightly flaring neck, twisted and slightly curving horns at the back of the head, large oval eye sockets at the sides of the head with slightly protruding domed eyes, a c-shaped mouth as viewed from the side with a slightly pointed tongue that protrudes diagonally forwards, and a ridge with a scalloped edge extending over the head and top of the mouth. The mask is painted with a black neck, eye rims, and sides of mouth, white eyes and horn tips, white on the scalloped edge of the ridge, red and black triangles along the sides of the ridge. yellow, white, red and black bands over the top of the head and mouth, and the remainder of the mask is painted red.

Cultural Context

Called goli, meaning buffalo. Represents Kakagye, the spirit of the dead, who devours witches and demons and gives protection against bullets. Sight of one is forbidden to women in that community.
