Description
Light brown, translucent anorak, or hooded coat, made from strips of intestine sewn together horizontally; the centre of the strips of intestine are marked by a long silvery grey streak. Long sleeves and hood with drawstring. Appears to be machine stitched.
History Of Use
Traditionally used as a waterproof coat.
Narrative
An Alaskan artist working in fishskin and gut inspected the coat in 1998 and said the stye suggested an Aleut origin, based on the type of horizontal strips and the high neck. She also said the gut appears to be from a sea lion.
