Description

Shirushi banten (印半纏), a type of hanten, also known as happi (法被, 半被) with black designs on white background. Around the neck and part way down the centre opening is a wide black band. The sleeves are short and the ends are edged with a thick black band. The front, back and sleeves have a diamond and stripe pattern. There is a pocket in each side seam. There is a folded black ribbon sewn inside the left sleeve. The inside is unlined.

History Of Use

Shirushi banten (印半纏), a type of hanten, also known as happi (法被, 半被) is a casual wear. There are different styles of hanten (袢纏) for different uses. It is worn as a winter jacket/coat if padded, a workman’s jacket, by traditional shopkeepers or during a festival. Worn over ordinary clothes, not over kimono.
