Description
Mask with protruding nose and open mouth with thin lips. The mask is painted white with and undulating black and red design at the top of the head, heavy black eyebrows, black around the eyes, a red nose tip, a black moustache with upturned and pointed ends, red lips, and three red semi-circular shapes on both sides of the face. Cord attached on reverse through holes in the sides and top of the mask.
History Of Use
Used in Tlhas'ala. Hole in forehead where feathers were placed (C. George, 1966).
Iconographic Meaning
This mask may be one of the Gidaxanis group, representing a Tlingit chief and his slaves. Originally with a moon coming out of the forehead.
