Prussian Potzdam musket made from heavily finished dark wood stock with a brass trigger guard and barrel fitting. Muzzle loading musket. 'N1856 4874' stamped into barrel. Makers' stamp 'Saarn' and small crown crest stamped into side plate. 'C5289' stamped into brass fitting. '1844' stamped on butt.
Originally made for use in Prussia (now Germany), however it was later sent to South Africa, and was said by the donor to have been used during the Boer War. The musket's mechanism was modified in 1856.
