Description

Female face mask with orange and red hair-like curvilinear bands that sweep down from the top of the mask around the sides to the bottom of the jaw, heavy black eyebrows, green around the slightly protruding eye holes, orange nostrils and lips, black on the chin divided with a carved red line, and orange designs just below the cheeks. The mouth is slightly protruding and open, and the chin also protrudes. Green cord attached at several points around the edge at the reverse of the mask with metal nails.

Narrative

Stylistically this mask is unquestionably Nuxalk (Holm; Macnair), but it may have been made by a Nuxalk artist and then passed into the Kwakwaka'wakw community, where it was collected.
