Description

Mask with sweeping black hair that thins towards the ends, an angled, prominent brow, sunken eye sockets with small, oval eye holes, protruding ears at the sides, a hooked nose with pointed tip and large nostrils, a pursed mouth, and black cloth attached to the top of the head with metal nails. The mask is pointed black with white and red bands around the eye holes, red nostrils with white borders, white curvilinear lines under the eye sockets, and red lips.

History Of Use

Dzunuk'wa dance mask. The chief's mask, giqamtlh, is distinguished from other Dzunuk'wa masks by its hair trim. It is worn by the chief when gifts are given or copper is broken (J. Dick, 1966).
