Description

Small silver brooch in the shape and carved design of an American eagle with outspread wings and its head facing right. Metal fastening pin soldered onto back.

Specific Techniques

Thought to have been made from a hammered Canadian dime: hammered, cut, engraved, and soldered.

Narrative

Given to the donor's mother by his godfather. The godfather was a minister / missionary for the Anglican Church who spent time in or around Alert Bay in the '30s and '40s. The brooch was declared to have been made from a Canadian dime. The RBCM has a pin very similar to this one that is attributed to Charlie James, which led to MOA’s artist attribution. However Charlie James was not known to do silver engraving, so there is some doubt about the attribution. (MOA's pin 1459/2 is also very similar and possibly made by the same artist.)
