Description

Portable altar with a three-dimensional depiction of peasants in love. The exterior walls of the altar are painted yellow-white with red borders. On the left, right and top sides of the altar, there are purple leaves painted over the background. The doors of the object are attached with two pieces of leather per side; the leather pieces serve as hinges. There is a large painted flower split between the two doors. The centre of the flower is a grey base with red cross-hatching over top. Above the doors, there is a triangular piece of wood attached to the façade to create a peaked roofline. The design on the triangular piece of wood is faded but a cross-hatched flower centre remains visible. There is a flower painted on the interior of each door. They are grey, purple and red with cross-hatched centres. There are three vultures flying above the three-dimensional scene inside the altar. Two of them are attached to the top wall and the other is attached high on the left wall. The vultures are black with red beaks and red plumes atop their heads. One of the vultures has a black lamb in its talons. There are faint clouds and mountains painted on the back wall of the altar. The ground has hills and valleys formed from clay. On the left side of the object, a brown and black striped donkey sits atop a hill. In the foreground in front of the donkey, there is a cave under which two small animals sit. On the right side of the altar, there is a tall hill on which three birds are perched. There are many animals sitting and standing within the scene; there are lambs, bulls, rams and donkeys. Near the middle of the scene, towards the background, one animal rests atop another animal’s back. Behind these two, there is a man and a woman. The woman, on the left, has a grey hat, two black braids and a pink skirt. Her hands are upraised as if she is dancing. Her partner stands to the right; he wears a red coat, grey hat and plays a guitar. There is another couple right of the musical one. The woman is lying with her back on the ground and one of her legs revealed. Her lover wears a red coat and black pants and is stooped over her. The artist’s name and location are written on the back of the work in blue paint.
