Description

Painting of Santiago Matamoros (St. James). The canvas is contained within a thin wooden frame. While the frame is square, the edges of the central image are rounded because there are sloped borders in each corner. Each of the corners is outlined in orange, has a dark red background and a yellow flower with curled leaves. The sky serves as the background of the painting. It is blue with fluffy white clouds. Atop a rounded brown hill, against the horizon on the left side of the painting, there is a pink building with a cylindrical portion that has a domed roof. There is a thin green tree on either side of the pink building. On the right side of the painting, there is a rounded blue hill with three thin green trees on top. Many of the brown trees in the background have four-petal flowers with yellow and black leaves. The flowers vary in colour from pink to red to yellow. On the left side of the painting, a soldier falls to the ground. He has a spear upraised and a round shield attached to his right hip. He wears a yellow and orange striped tunic with blue details on it. He has short black hair and a black beard. A similarly dressed man falls on the right side of the image. A third soldier in the same attire falls to the ground headfirst in the middle of the painting. He is visible between the legs of a horse in the foreground of the painting. The horse is grey white and wears a red bridle and saddle; it is sticking out its tongue. The saddle has yellow detailing. Santiago de Compostela sits on top of the horse. He wears red boots, a red tunic and a red swashbuckler’s hat. The tunic has gold star motifs adorning it. He wears a blue bib and a blue cape. He holds a round shield in his right hand and a curved scabbard in his left hand. The scabbard has an elaborate yellow handle and blood along its blade. There is a piece of tape on the top side of the back of the object with a number written on it in pencil. Also on the back of the work, a wire for hanging is attached to the left and right sides of the frame with metal eye hooks.
