He is petting the donkey on which his wife and child sit. Joseph wears a toque-like hat. Details on the hat and his eyes, mustache and beard are painted dark brown. In his right hand, Joseph holds a piece of dark brown fruit. His other hand touches the nose of the donkey. The neckline and arm bands of his shirt are painted dark brown.
