Description

Low-fired ceramic depicting Joseph and Mary’s flight to Egypt with baby Jesus. Mary is facing front, while Joseph stands with his back to the viewer on the left. He is petting the donkey on which his wife and child sit. Joseph wears a toque-like hat. Details on the hat and his eyes, mustache and beard are painted dark brown. In his right hand, Joseph holds a piece of dark brown fruit. His other hand touches the nose of the donkey. The neckline and arm bands of his shirt are painted dark brown. There is a harness around the donkey’s head. The animal has brown eyes and brown detailing on its body. Mary sits on the donkey’s back holding her baby. They are sitting on a saddle which is affixed to the donkey by a strap underneath its tail. She wears an elaborate hat on her head. The hat has lost a piece on top of it as indicated by two points of breakage; it may have been a handle. She has a jug strapped to her back. The back of her shirt and the neckline are painted brown.
