Description

Large black stone sculpture of a kneeling female figure in a parka. The figure has stylized features: long slanted eyes, rounded cheeks and forehead, a bulbous nose and a wide mouth. The hair is demarked by horizontal chisel marks and is parted at the centre of the figure’s forehead. The ends of the arms are also roughly chiselled. The junction between the figures legs and torso is emphasized by a deep ridge.

Narrative

Originally a gift from Ferdinand Eckhardt (director of the Winnipeg Art Gallery 1953-1974) to German painter Karl Schmidt Rottluff (1884–1976) in Berlin. The donor's grandfather, German sculptor Georg Kolbe (1877-1947), was close friends with Rottluff, which is how the sculpture eventually ended up in her family.
