Description

Small jade carving of a sleeping goose. Bird sits on feet tucked beneath its body, wings gathered to its sides, neck twisted to allow head to rest on its back. The bird's feathers, facial features and feet are incised and emphasized with some kind of dark brown dye or pigment.

Narrative

Probably carved in early Ming dynasty and dyed in the late Ming dynasty. People at that time tended to dye or stain pieces to make them look older. The head of the goose has been drilled or chiseled with small holes for inserting the dye. Carved from a nephrite river pebble.
