Description

Byzantine coin of Heraclius, 610-641. Obverse: two standing figures, facing forwards; to left, Heraclius; to right, Heraclius Constantine, his son; Heraclius holds long cross; Heraclius Constantine holds globus cruciger; between their heads, there is a cross; beneath them, there is a circular punch, which is approximately 1.5cm in diameter; within the circular punch, it says ‘SCL’; to right, small ‘S’. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, ‘[A]NNO’ in a vertical position; beneath, ‘E’; in exergue, ‘CON’; there is a circular punch above the ‘M’, which is also approximately 1.5cm in diameter; within circular punch, there are two busts; to left, Heraclius, who is bearded and wears a crown with a cross; to right, Heraclius Constantine, his son, who is without a beard and also wears a crown with a cross; between their heads, there is a cross. This coin is an example of an earlier coin being countermarked.
