Description

Byzantine coin of Heraclius, 610-641. Obverse: bust of Heraclius, facing forwards, holding a globus cruciger in his right hand and a long cross in his left; he wears a crown with cross; to right, ‘XϤ’; in exergue, ‘NIKOB’. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, ‘[AN]NO’ in a vertical position; to right, ‘IIII’ in a vertical position; beneath, ‘Γ’; in exergue, 'CON'; above everything, there is a large head, with beard and crown; to right of the head, there is a cross. Coin has been overstruck, causing confused inscriptions on both sides.

Narrative

Due to being overstruck, it is difficult to know which inscriptions and images belong to which emperor and therefore difficult to classify. In addition, the style of Heraclius does not quite appear to match any coin listed in the Dumbarton Oaks or Sears catalogues.
