Description

A carved wooden bugaku (舞楽) mask of batō (抜頭), painted in high-gloss red. The face has gold eyes and teeth, with a large hooked nose and ridged forehead. The face is painted red with black eyebrows and eye sockets. There are holes in the eyes and mouth. Black cord is laced through the top of the mask to make hair, and two strands of red cord are threaded through the ears and tied at back. Parts b-c are a light wood box, made to house the mask, with Japanese inscriptions written on the outside and interior in black ink.

History Of Use

Bugaku (舞楽) is a Japanese traditional dance, historically performed in the imperial court. It has origins in some forms of dance and music from China and Korea that arrived in Japan around the seventh century, and developed to its full form during the Heian period (9-12 the centuries). Bugaku is a genre of gagaku (雅楽), court music.

Narrative

This mask was gifted to UBC by Tenri University (天理大学), Nara Prefecture, Japan. The writings on the outside of the box read “舞楽面 抜頭” (bugaku-men (mask) of batō) and on the interior read “謹呈 ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学殿 第九回海外親善訪問演奏旅行の記念として、そして貴校の受け入れを感謝し、舞楽「抜頭」の面を贈ります。一九九三年三月二十七日 天理大学雅楽部 (Dear the University of British Columbia. To commemorate the 9th performing trip to enhance friendship and thank you for hosting us, we offer you a bugaku mask of batō. March 27, 1993. Tenri University Gagaku Club.
