Description

Dog blanket. Textile is made of black velvet on two joined panels, embroidered with glass beads creating colourful flowers in pink, green, and blue with white and yellow foliage. These panels would hang down the sides of the dog. At centre is an oblong insert of blue felt surrounded by short grey and red wool fringe. At edges of blanket sit longer black and red fringe. Backing is of thick wool fabric, striped, with five panels of leather holding thongs to attach blanket to the wearer.

Narrative

Beadwork suggests a Metis maker, based on the style of the flowers, however the blanket was collected from a Tahltan - Kaska Dena community.

Specific Techniques

Beads used are all size 12; two needle technique. Maker used chalk on the velvet to draw the design before beading.
