Description

Gourd hat. Half-gourd creates the dome of the hat, with stem raised at centre. An edging of rattan wraps around the base of the gourd and is hammered into place with small nails. Interior holds woven rattan lining and soft ring that cushions the head. Twisted fibre chin ties emerge from either side of ring.

Narrative

The hat was originally obtained in the Philippines by a man in the US military, in the late 1950s or early 1960s. He gave the hat to the donor in the 1970s.
