History Of Use

Kulebele (ancient mother) figure used by male Poro and female Sandogo initiation societies. In Poro, figures of the primordial mother confirm her stature as its head; Sandogo, which trains females in divination, incorporates smaller nature spirits in its shrines. The production of Senufo wooden sculpture is the purview of the Kulebele, woodcarvers who traditionally carve domestic and ritual wooden items.
