Description

Digital print mounted on board. The image shows the lower legs and feet of a short-haired female figure wearing a t-shirt and jeans, standing in shallow water. The legs and bare feet are in the upper quarter, with the rest of the person reflected below (upside down in the image). The background reflected in the water shows the sky, with some white clouds visible across the upper section. (Hanging hardware attached to back.)

History Of Use

From an edition of 3. The title translates to “as in heaven I am on earth” from the 'Lord’s Prayer.' From a body of work produced for a 2006 exhibition at the Franco Soffiantino Gallery, Torino, Italy. Belmore took on the imagery of Christianity to speak of Indigenous resistance in Canada, where Indigenous cultures were forever altered by Christianity. Among other works, the exhibition included digital prints mounted on aluminum that represent an Indigenous Adam and Eve standing in a vacant parking lot and "floating like angels in the sky." This edition is mounted on Omega Board.

Narrative

Purchased by the donor in 2009, at the Western Front 36th anniversary auction.
