Description

Cast bronze figure of a woman sitting and cleaning rice. Figure’s body and limbs are long and thin. She has a long rounded nose, pronounced lips and eyes, and heavy brows. Her hair is curly, with incised lines throughout, and is styled in a low bun. Figure is wearing a short skirt, with incised horizontal lines throughout, and triangular headpiece. The edges of the headpiece are braided, front has diagonal incised lines throughout, and back is plain. Wearing earrings, anklets, arm bands and a necklace that wraps around her neck before draping down in between her breasts. Two swirl designs, done in relief, on the figure’s shoulders. Her left leg is propped up, her right leg is bent and resting flat. In her left hand she is holding a container with rope cords, in her left she is holding a handled platter with water(?) running off it. Two semi-circular protrusions along bottom edge, on back of figure.

Purchased by the donor in 2013 at a dhokra workshop in a village in the Kondagaon District of Chhattisgarh state.
