Description

Flexible, cylindrical basket with flat base. Top edge is made of loops with a plant fibre cord strung through them. Cord connects to adjustable straps on either side of the basket. Straps are braided bands with looped ends. All sides of basket are decorated with mirrored horizontal bands. Middle row has a geometric motif on a naturally coloured background. Motif consists of repeating squares with triangles inside them, squares are divided with vertical bands of plain lines and concentric cubes. Plain black lines are on either side of middle row. Bands above and below are dyed black and have a naturally coloured wave pattern. Edge bands, bordered on either side with black lines, are black and have naturally coloured zigzags running through them. Base of basket has a wide black border, centre is naturally coloured.

Acquired by the donor in 1976-1978, when he lived and worked in Sabah, on the island of Borneo, as a volunteer with CUSO International.
