Description

Large, rectangular storyboard painting on ironwood. Bordered on all sides with a band of alternating black and yellow triangles. Depicts a yellow, white and maroon boat, operated by three people, sailing on a dark blue sea, away from a black coastline. Two large buildings on centre of land, with tall pointed roofs. Buildings are yellow, brown, white and red; roofs are black and white. Gables are yellow and have animal, human and geometric motifs incised across them in rows. Palm trees around buildings. In foreground, on the water, is a maroon canoe filled with fourteen people; twelve are holding paddles upright, one is at the rudder, one is on a central platform, blowing a horn(?). Large black and white bird flying in the top left corner, with a fish caught in its beak. Scene done in mix of high and low relief carving. Background is naturally coloured. Unsigned. (Hanging hardware attached to back.)

Narrative

The storyboard was a gift to Dr. Wilfred Goding c. 1966 by the Island of Yap, upon his departure as High Commissioner to the US Trust Territories of the Pacific Islands. Dr. Goding was an uncle of the donor’s wife.
