Description

Small ovular basket with imbricated designs across exterior, single-row foot, and cross-hatched rim. Walls of basket flare slightly outward from base, making opening larger than foot. Designs consist of inverted, concentric triangles, that extend from opening towards middle of basket. Done in black, red-brown, and light yellow-white; centres of triangles are light yellow-white. Two crosses extend from tips of each triangle; done in black with light yellow-white centres. Identical cross patterns in between triangles; done in red-brown with light yellow-white centres. Rim of opening, along exterior walls, decorated with naturally coloured cherry bark. Base and interior are undecorated.

Narrative

From 1919 - 1936 the donors' grandfather, Richard G. Newton was superintendent of an Agricultural Experimental Station in Windemere, BC. After that they moved to Prince George, where Newton was assigned to direct an Experimental Farm in Pineview. The grandparents later retired in Chilliwack. The two donors, Hart and Brooks, inherited the collection from their father.
