Description

Fishing creel with rounded base that atpers up to a flat lid with a small rectangular hole in the middle, and a slanted, concave back. The basket is constructed of simple coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with parallel slat base construction. Decorated with partial imbrication in a vertical striped pattern in light brown cat-tail, red and black cherry bark.

History Of Use

Previously thought to be a pipe and tobacco holder, but Nlaka'pamux Elder Shirley Sterling suggests that these types of baskets are used for fishing, usually trout.
