Description
Short-sleeved buckskin dress with multicoloured beading and fringes along the hem, sides and sleeves. Predominately red, white, black, dark and light blue beading; beading at neck and hem of dress. Area around shoulders stained red.
Narrative
This was made for a young girl. Originally, the dress was decorated with a pattern of red, white, black and blue round beads. The cowrie shells and hexagonal beads were a later addition.
Iconographic Meaning
The red ochre, applied around the shoulders, was commonly used for spiritual protection.
