Description
Carved wooden figure in the shape of an owl with wings spread. The head of the owl has backwards pointing, triangular-shaped ears and two large circular eyes with smaller engraved circles inside of them. Owl has a rounded body and two legs with three claws at end of each foot. Wing feathers are delineated. The object is painted with a dark stain.
Iconographic Meaning
In Coast Salish oral traditions owls are associated with supernatural power and the spirits of the dead. They are also known to be messengers and are sometimes associated with clairvoyance.
