Scarf3188/11 a-c

Three pieces (parts a-c) of finely woven, gauze cotton of different lengths and widths. Each piece has panels of embroidery in white and green, with diamond-shaped and floral motifs in yellow, pink, blue and red. Part ‘a’ is very long and thin, with an embroidered panel at each end and two near midpoint. Part ‘b’ is shorter and wider, made of two pieces of white cotton delicately sewn together in a long centre seam. Panels at each end. Part ‘c’ is the smallest and roughly square, with a single panel at one end.

Basket2960/32 a-b

Large woven basket has a relatively short bulbous body (part a), angling sharply in and upwards at the base. The round pedestal foot sits inside the body perimeter, only partially visible in profile. It is decorated with a single ring of cowrie shells. To the basket are attached four strips of hide, each with three rows of cowrie shells attached. The strips are long and thin, holding the lid (part b) to the body of the basket. The lid is round and wide, with an inset lip allowing it to sit snugly on top of the basket body. The lid rises to a high centre protrusion. Body and lid are decorated with dyed dark brown and red zigzags and concentric upsidedown Vs.

Large shawl that goes with tunic, trousers, and vest (Ca35 a-b, d) to form a suit. The shawl is made of two pieces of white gauze and hand sewn together. There is a woven lime green and white geometric border and short white fringe along both ends.

Cross pendant composed of four teardrop-shaped lobes, each ornamented with three small spheres on the sides as well as twisted silver wire coiled around a circle at the centre. A single band of twisted silver wire ornaments the edge of each lobe on the reverse. A loop is attached at the top.

Cross pendant with a circular shape composed of perforated shapes and a series of three-pointed protrusions surrounding a central circle with an equal sided cross. The pendant is hinged to a plated brass loop, and the chain it hangs from alternates plain and twisted wire links.

Cross pendant composed of four arms, each with three pointed protruding elements and ornamented with one large and several smaller coiled wire circles within which are raised solid spheres. A hinged piece with a loop at the top, also ornamented with coiled wires and solid spheres, is attached at the top of the cross. The pendant is strung on a chain of alternating plain and coiled links with a hook fastener.
