Shawl3248/2

Finely woven shawl. On a black ground are dense stripes made of sketch-style white lines, running the length of the textile. At each end sits a panel of loosely woven fibre, much like lace, with linear and diamond designs incorporated. The panels are finished with a fringe at each end.

The Donors3170/1 a-y

Contemporary retablo with ceramic figures, miniature retablos and paper books. The wooden box itself (part a) has a structured hole at centre front, taking the form of a stage. The wood is painted black and several images are adhered to it, such as a typewriter, human and animal figures, flowers, and Albert Einstein surrounded by pigeons. Ceramic figures of the donor and her husband (parts b and c), their dog (part d), and a small stool (part e) are placed in the retablo, as well as a small woven basket (part f) containing a crumpled sheet of paper (part y). There are three miniature retablos (parts g-i) of glass and wood, one of which is held by the woman, and many miniature books (parts j-x). Six of the books are filled with blank paper, while the other nine have titles and writing inside.

Angel Figure2903/39 a-b

Figure of a black angel with a brown wooden base (part b). The figure has a black head and hands formed out of clay. The head of the figure is hair formed from many green cone-like shapes. There are small gold-coloured beads embedded in the cone-like shapes. The figure has white eyes with brown irises; its lips are red. The head is hollow to accommodate the base. The angel does not have a neck; instead, its head is attached to a knitted t-shaped dress, from which the angel’s arms are extended outwards. The dress has wool fibres intermingled with plant fibres. There are various small objects affixed to the dress. There are four bottle caps placed across the angel’s chest and arms. The bottle cap on the furthest left has a small image printed on paper embedded within it. The image depicts an angel appearing to a group of people with a European-style cathedral in the background. The image in the bottle cap to the right depicts a young shepherd holding a staff and surrounded by sheep. Right of this bottle cap, another image in a bottle cap depicts an older shepherd with a halo. The bottle cap on the furthest right has an image in it depicting an angel in a pink dress feeding birds. Below the bottle caps, on the left side of the angel’s torso, there is a small clothes pin that is painted blue. The clip holds a rectangular piece of paper with an image of a man printed on it; he is depicted from the torso up. The man has black hair and a black mustache. The man wears a blue suit jacket, blue vest and blue tie over a white dress shirt; he also has a white pocket square. Right of the image of the man is a miniature clear plastic bottle with a blue liquid inside. The bottle is tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Next to the bottle, there is a small bronze-coloured cross attached to the dress. Right of the cross, a miniature white and blue ceramic spoon is tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Below the picture of the man, there is a miniature white and blue cup tied to the dress with purple ribbon. Right of the cup, there is another bottle cap that has an image embedded within it. The image depicts Madonna holding baby Jesus. Both figures wear elaborate crowns and are surrounded by a yellow halo. Next to the bottle cap, there is a small clothes pin painted red. On the right side of the dress, there is a gold-coloured coin with an image of a domed building on one side and an image of Jesus Christ on the other. It is tied to the dress with green ribbon. Below the cup, there is a small plastic figure of a baby tied to the dress with a green ribbon. It has brown hair, black eyes and red lips. Right of the baby, there is a bottle cap with an image printed on paper embedded within it. The image depicts Jesus Christ holding a lamb. Below this bottle cap, there is a bronze-coloured flower with a stem and two leaves. Next to the flower, in the lower right corner of the dress, there is a bottle cap with an image of Jesus Christ sitting and praying embedded in it. The angel’s wings are made of two pieces of silver metal. They are knitted into the back of the dress. The base is formed by a thin cylindrical piece of wood that is held in a square wooden base.

El Circo2903/40 a-h

Box depicting a circus, including three-dimensional performers and characters. The box has a deep green frame that surrounds the stage of the circus. On the left and right sides on the front of the box, there are red, gold and green painted panels with images of birds and hearts. In the lower left corner is an image of a clown on paper applied to the box. The clown holds a circular sign around his face that reads in English “only to say how do you do and introduce myself to you.” A sign at the top of the box on the front side reads “Mageepan” in green letters surrounded by a red rectangle. Near the bottom of the left and right interior walls images of children watching the circus have been added. There are six small holes in the interior top wall; red cord extends out of five of them and a thin wooden stick comes out of the other. The wooden stick descends into a hole in the bottom, interior side of the object. In the same fashion, another wooden stick extends horizontally across the interior of the object, near the top. The red cords are attached to two wooden trapeze bars and to a large painted ball. A figure is suspended from each of the trapeze bars. They have ceramic hands, feet and heads and wear black and white costumes with red sashes, and have silver pipe cleaners wrapped around their black hats. The back wall of the circus is painted with parted green curtains and a red backdrop. A woman in a black dress flies across the red backdrop. A crescent moon is painted overtop the green curtain near the right side of the object. A paper cherub is above the moon. A paper image of a girl in a pink hat, dress and white eggshell costume is on the bottom left side of the back wall near the green curtain. To her right, there is a large painted grey elephant with a paper harlequin sitting atop it. In front of the green curtain in the lower right corner is a paper elephant wearing a red jacket and green and yellow striped pants riding a gold bicycle. Parts b-h are removable figures and miniature chairs. The figures have ceramic hands, feet and heads. Their bodies and clothing are made of cloth. Figure b is a woman wearing a black dress with large purple, yellow and red flowers on it and a black turban-like hat. Part c is a woman sitting on a small wooden chair. She wears a red tunic, short red pants, black boots and a black turban-like hat and has a flower painted on her cheek. Figure d is a human-bird hybrid. Its body is round, black and soft and has black sequins around the neckline. The figure’s face has a yellow beak and black designs painted onto it. Part e is a man with a mustache wearing a black and white gingham shirt and a green hat. Part f is a small wooden chair with a seat made from woven pieces of wood. Part g is a woman wearing a purple turban-like hat, red V-neck tunic and orange pants. Figure h is a mustachioed man wearing blue pants, a striped blue and white shirt and pink and green suspenders with blue flowers; his hair is black and curly.

Knitted doll (finger puppet ?) of famous Argentinean soccer player, Diego Maradona. The blue, white, black and beige wool figure is a knitted tube with legs and arms, stuffed feet and head and it is holding a stuffed soccer ball in one hand. There is an opening in the back at the neck of the shirt and a loop at the top of the head.

Bracelet3518/2

Silver(?) bracelet consisting of eight circular charms connected with chains; the eighth charm is divided in half and secured together with a tab insert clasp. From left to right, charms depict: coin from 1882, scene of horse and tree, coin from 1882, guitar, coin from 1882, and scene of wagon, tree and house. Space between charm edges and designs have been cutout. The split charms have plain borders and curvlinear motifs in the corners.
