Shield2720/32

Large wooden shield with carved and painted designs. The shield is rectangular in shape, with rounded corners at the top end from which a pointed post protrudes. On the front is a design with curl and diamond motifs in burnt orange, outlined in dark brown on whitish ground. Knotted through one of eight holes along the sides of the shield is a sisal fibre tassel. On the back is a protruding curved handle with two square holes, one larger than the other.

Oval, concave board with front-facing seated figure at one end. Carved and painted decoration on front made up of three opposing double curls and two small ovals painted orange, a white background, black relief borders and a black band below figure. Figure rests his left elbow on his knee, left hand to his head while his right hand holds the left arm. The body is white, carved eyes, mouth, fingers and body decoration are painted orange and the top of the head is black.

Long, oval, concave wood board with two carved figures at one end. The bottom figure is seated, elbows to knees, and holds the feet of the standing figure above him; both have white bodies with orange and black highlights. Below the figures is an orange painted band. The carved design on the front consists of four sets of burnt orange double curls on a white background with black relief borders. The back of the board is painted white with three black horizontal stripes.

Small wooden shield with carved and painted designs. Rectangular in shape, with rounded corners. On the top is a small carved head with a large rear loop. On the front are large double-curl motifs; three curling down, one curling up. Curls are painted in orange-red, outlined in brown on white ground. On the back is a protruding curved handle with a square hole.

Oval board with carved figure standing at the flat end and the other end rounded. Figure with square jaw, thick neck and well-developed muscles in shoulder and chest faces forward, hands to the ground and what may be a bowl ? beside him. The surface of the board below him is carved with decoration that is white and orange in the negative areas and black on the raised outlines; the back of the board is carved out to create a raised rim around it and painted orange.

Carved oval concave board, painted white, burnt orange, reddish brown and black, with roughly carved, unpainted standing figure at one end. Decoration of painted designs covers top surface, carved and painted designs cover bottom surface. In front of figure is a shield with carved and painted ear-like designs. The entire back of the figure is covered with horizontal cuts.

Long, roughly carved, dark wood board is divided by design into two segments. Bottom half has an ornate, wandering vine with leaves, flowers and snakes carved in relief, with the recesses painted in a red wash, and a vertical handle in the shape of a lizard(?). Top half is a cut-out frontal view of a male figure with face turned to his left, arms bent at elbows and reaching up to touch or support wide hat or roof.
