Wand3420/49

Wand with heavily beaded handle. Three sections of bands of colours - dark brown, yellow, orange and light blue, with three sections of triangles in white, dark green, yellow and orange. There is a section where the shaft splits into four smaller pieces that are wrapped in light blue and black beads. Above the beading, the handle is wrapped in red fabric with two small loops of plant fibre cord attached. Extending from the other end is long, straight dark red-brown horse(?) hair over wood, that folds over on itself where the wood ends.

Buffalo Headdress3420/47

Wooden bovine headdress (or helmet mask). Carved from wood and covered with cloth and glass beads. The entire mask is decorated with bright blue beads, with eyes of red and white beads, nostrils and lips in red. The muzzle tapers somewhat between the head and nose, with the mouth open, exposing large block teeth and a tongue. There are small rounded ears, and two long horns that extend toward the back. There are short lengths of cord knotted at the back.

Tunic3420/48

Tunic covered in beadwork. Short-sleeved, box-shaped, high neck with round neckline, and an open back with two ties at top and bottom. Neckline, sleeve cuffs, and hem edged in red. Beadwork is light blue, white and yellow in overall open net-like diamond pattern, with elongated, vertical, diamond patterns at both sides, repeated in small on the sleeves.

Figure standing with knees slightly bent, right hand holding a staff, and left hand holding a horn. The person wears a pouch across their body with the pouch sitting on the left hip, and a loin cloth. The figure is carved to have short curly hair tied back with a headband. The surface has flaking paint and the entire left foot is missing from the ankle, down. Each foot has a single hole drilled in the bottom.

Buffalo Headdress3294/2

Wooden bovine headdress (or mask). The animal has two large, slightly curved horns extending up and over its head. There are two small ears on either side, next to the eyes which are carved in low relief. The snout is long, with nostrils flared at the end, and teeth bared. The teeth, eyes and nostrils show remnants of white paint.

Mask2735/4

Beaded red and black elephant mask. Two long panels of black cotton fibre with red bordering, red, white, blue and multi-colour bead decoration, and burlap backing are sewn together at one end to form a stocking face mask, with large eye openings and large round protruding ears, that pulls over the top of the head. Attached to the top is a large plate-shaped basketry headdress with white canvas covering the flat top and red and black textile on the sides and bottom. Several figures with beaded facial features are attached to top brim and slope down to bottom of cap.

Ndop textile made of two panels sewn together. Complex design in off-white on indigo ground includes segmented circles, interlocking swastika-like shapes, connected triangles, dots and a band of propeller shapes at each fringed end. Interspersed throughout are grass stitches.

Buffalo Headdress1491/5

Buffalo, or bush cow, headdress (or mask). The animal has a long narrow face, with tapered horns on its head that curve inward at the ends. The lower part of thehorns is decorated with a white cross-hatching design. The head of the animal has eyes carved in relief and outlined in white paint, small oval-shaped protruding ears, wide oval-shaped nostrils painted white in the centre, and a slightly open mouth with large white painted teeth.

Calabash gourd container (part a) on a coiled fibre base with all-over bead design and stopper (part b) in the form of a bird head. Design repeats complex red, orange, blue, black, and white geometric forms on the body, the base, the neck, and the bird-like features on the head which include eyes. Hollow base is outlined with shell while the interior of the base is lined with burlap stitched to finer burlap covering the calabash. Wood stopper (part b) is covered at the joint with striped cotton and is secured to the outer bead layer with a nail.
