Cantonese Opera Staff1704/10

Cantonese opera prop representing a mourning staff. Solid bamboo reed with frayed cloth wrapped around three-quarters of its length. The cloth is beige and brown. The part of the reed that is showing has been painted blue-green. It has a hole running through its diameter near the end through which a blue, twisted string is looped.

Cantonese Opera Prop1704/7

Decapitated head opera prop. Representation of a human head. Eyebrows are painted black, eyes are black and white, lips are red, and edge of throat is rimmed with red. A looped rod extends from the top of the head. It is wrapped with grey fibre. Black fibre is wrapped overtop of the grey fibre and hangs down at the sides. There is a hole on top of the head where the rod is attached.

Cantonese Opera Drum1704/6

Spherical wooden drum with two opposite sides covered with skin. Skin is attached to wood by metal rivets that ring the outer edge of the material. Two metal rings are attached on either side of the drum via two small holes in the wood.

Cloisonne Teapot1753/1 a-b

Teapot (a) with hexagonal curved sides and two metal handles slotted into brackets on flat shoulder. Raised neck holds lid. Curved spout. Decoration of books, flowers in baskets, floral and geometric borders. Interior is blue enamel, edges are metal. Lid (b) has flower pattern and a metal decoration added in the form of a grape branch and a mouse under a flower.

Shoes1613/2 a-b

Pair of bound foot shoes. Upper is made of off-white silk with blue and black trim along the top and floral embroidery around the toe. Heel is covered with pink brocade and black piping. Soles are grey stitched cotton. An elongated tab of dark purple fabric hangs from the back of the heel. White cotton lining.

Robe1613/1

Black robe with wide sleeves, centre opening with frog closures and rounded neck. On the front and back are butterfly, lotus, orchid and floral motifs and roundels with figures in a garden in pink, purple, white, blue and green on a black ground. The end of the sleeves are cut in a wave-like shape. The inside lining is turquoise silk.
