Large, burnished, round clay pot in the shape of an opening bud with eight points around rim and distinctly footed base. Blackened areas resulting from the firing process cover both the shiny exterior surface and the dull interior surface. The exterior surface ranges in colour from off-white to almost black. Signed and dated by artist on base, inside foot.
Tan basket (part a) of simple interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with parallel slat base construction. Sides are open work with the slats alternating with loop work rows. The basket has a handle (now separated, part b). The rim is finished with a looped row with a plain row over it. Beading over the side slats (four beaded rows/slat). Alternating and staggered cherry bark and cat-tail grass strips, either black or red cherry bark for entire slat.
The cord is commercial.
'In the Spirit of the Ancestors'-This robe is believed to be the first robe woven of mountain goat wool in Washington State in the 20th century. By the early 20th century, traditional mountain goat wool robes had been replaced by commercial trade blankets. Fran James and her son Bill have been instrumental in reviving and continuing the traditional weaving and basketry skills of the Lummi people.
