Burden BasketA8827

Burden basket made of coiled cedar root woven together with cherry bark and cat-tail grass (?). Simple coiled work with bifurcated stitches and an elongated watch-spring base construction. The upper half is decorated with a meander motif in black bark on white grass, two on each side or end. The lower half has a "cluster of flies" pattern (checkerboard strips) in black cherry bark. Two rawhide loops on one of the wider sides.

Large flared rectangular coiled cedar root burden basket. Parallel splint base construction. Upper half fully imbricated in grass with designs of 'c' shapes in mirror image, in dark cherry bark double outline. Dark cherry bark double stitches at intervals around the rim. Few remains of imbricated design on lower portion in double zig-zag outline in grass, with top and bottom points flattened.

Coiled tan cedar root basketry cradle decorated with partial beading. The sides have a series of chevron figures in both black and red cherry bark with elaborate grass and cherry bark beading at the head. The end of the cradle features a series of double forms, giving modified chevron form. The rim has continuous imbrication around the circumference. Simple interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with parallel slat base construction and splint overcast rim construction. Splint row at foot of base.

Red and tan coiled cedar root basketry cradle. The rim is beaded in black cherry bark (1:1 ratio). The first four slat rows are beaded with four rows, the first in black cherry bark and the next three in cat-tail grass (2:1 ratio) over varying parts of the basket. Twelve small imbricated panels in one of two basic patterns. Simple interlocking coiled work (bifurcated stitches) with parallel slat construction and an overcast rim. There are three holes, one made at the shorter end and two side-by-side on the bottom.

Storage basket with foot on base, and handles. The basket is made with a cedar root splint foundation and coiled cedar root. It is decorated with imbrication in cat-tail grass as well as red and black cherry bark. Cedar root slats for flange and foot. Slat foot and top edge of coil trimmed with black and red cherry bark and cat-tail grass imbrication. The design consists of vertical bands of black triangles on off-white with red borders on the sides, and groups of five black squares assembled in lines on the top of the lid with a row of groups of two black squares at either end. One row of beading along top edge and bottom foot. The lid currently on the basket may not be original to this basket? (Lid # A6708).

Decorated with partial beading where every other slat is beaded (2:2 ratio). Beading on the slats alternates in red and black cherry bark.
