Basket3204/17 a-b

Round lidded basket. Basket is woven in narrow strips on the exterior, with wider strips used for the interior lining along with four extra large strips on bottom. Interior and exterior are sewn together with stitching below rim and on bottom. Exterior has undyed leaf woven with dyed leaf in pink, light green, and shades of purple, laying on the diagonal and creating wide sections in each colour. Bottom is a vibrant swirl of these colours. Lid (part b) is constructed in an identical way, with a loop at top centre serving as a handle.

Basket3204/18

Open-mouthed basket, with long, stiff, looped handle. Exterior is woven in narrow strips, with wider strips for the interior lining along with four extra large strips on bottom. Interior and exterior are sewn together with stitching below rim and across bottom. Colours used on exterior are dark purple-blue, light purple, pink, light green and natural. The words Pitcairn Island are woven into the side of the basket.

Ceremonial Paddle2960/43

Paddle carved out a single piece of wood. The blade is thin and leaf shaped, concave and intricately carved with small incised triangles, zigzags and half circles on both surfaces. The shaft is similarly decorated. The grip flares out from the shaft and is circular with a flat base. It too is intricately carved but with a larger pattern of decorated half circles and incised triangles, as well as leaf shaped protrusions around the base. The bottom of the grip has incised concentric circles with triangles.

Whisk2670/5 a-e

Whisk with a dark wooden handle wrapped in some areas with woven, light coloured grass in a geometric lozenge-patterned design. Whisk parts (parts b-e) are a braided dark plant fibre and are detached from the shaft. Handle has carved band around it at its end. The whisk has fourteen disc-like nodules connected to a carved section that has four "legs".

Ceremonial PaddleIj6

Rich dark brown wood paddle with a blade that has a pointed ovate shape, flattened on one side and semi-convexly curved with a ridge along the middle of the other side. The long cylindrical handle flares outward at an angle from the paddle blade. Entire surface covered with tightly packed carved lozenge design. Elaborate finial with a row of face-like motifs around the handle end.

BladeC107

A fairly smooth black stone with a long thin shape that is fairly triangular in cross section. One side is consistently flat, except for a slight horizontal bump. Two other sides are fairly rounded side-by-side mirror images of each other with a slightly tapered flat triangular section at an angle in between them to one end, creating a straight edge.
