FROM CARD: "SECTION OF TREE TRUNK, HOLLOWED OUT IN THE BACK, WITH 3 CONTRASTING SURFACES, THE NATURAL, WITH BLACK AND MEDIUM RED USED TO ACCENTUATE PARTS OF THE FIGURES. THIS POLE HAS BEEN REPRODUCED BY ALVA STUDIOS, NEW YORK, FOR SALE. LENT TO THE MUSEO NACIONAL DE ANTROPOLOGIA, MAY 18, 1964." Loan returned 2012.Information from Robin K. Wright, Burke Museum, 4-12-2012: I believe the model pole is Kaigani Haida, and am thinking it might have been carved by Dwight Wallace (or possibly John Wallace). I think it's a model based on one of corner posts of Duncan Ginaawaan's house in Klinkwan, AK, pictured in my book Northern Haida Master Carvers. It has a bear instead of the humanoid bear holding what I think is the woman in the moon, but the other bear figures and squared ears, and especially portrait-like woman below are very similar. John Wallace later copied this pole full sized for the Hydaburg Totem Park as part of the CCC project.
From card: "Spatula shape, represents a fish. Purchased from "Ye Olde Curiosity Shop", Seattle, Wash. Attached data tag does not suggest Haida origin. Additional info. in Lab Acc. file."
From card: "Painted [red] at corners and on cover, characteristically joined at corners."Lidded bentwood box, red corner type.
FROM CARD: "SEE ALSO CATALOGUE CARD FOR 13145. INVENTORIED 1980." Old labels glued onto back of totem pole model identify some of motifs as (from top) bear, wolf, and sea lion. The accession record lists "3 pieces stone carving by Haida Indians of Queen Charlotte Island B.C." as part of this accession. This object may be one of those pieces.
From card: "[front] Represents an eagle in low relief, surrounded by lettering as on a coin." Object was broken at the time it was catalogued and was subsequently repaired. Object has been attributed as possibly Haida? An argillite plate or dish with incised and carved relief decoration. Eagle design on front may be based on Heraldic eagle from reverse of a U.S. silver half dollar coin, probably from a "Seated Liberty" half dollar? Lettering on front, not all of which seems meaningful (and some letters are reversed or upside down), includes OHAFDOL below the eagle (for half dollar?), and SANFRANCISCO above the eagle. Note that many Seated Liberty half dollar coins from the New Orleans mint had an O under the eagle design on the reverse side, and said HALF DOL. below that; the New Orleans Mint (established 1838) began producing Seated Liberty half dollar coins in 1840. Back of object has compass/floral and leaf decoration, with cross-hatching. - F. Pickering 3-25-2009
