From card for E23523-46: "Dec 20, 1972, Bill Holm says that these are definitely Haida."Cultural ID for paddles E23523 - 23546 is somewhat in question. They were catalogued as Clallam, Bill Holm has identified them as Haida, but James Swan in correspondence in the accession file references 24 Bella Bella paddles.

PICKERING 6-29-1999ROBIN WRIGHT, BURKE MUSEUM, UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, FEELS TOTEM POLE MODEL T24468 MAY GO WITH THIS HOUSE MODEL. SHE HAS IDENTIFIED TOTEM POLE MODEL AS HAIDA STYLE.A photo of what appears to be this house model and totem pole model ET24468 on display together at the Smithsonian circa 1879 (photo may actually date more specifically to 1882 - early 1885) is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution Archives: Photo ID 2962 or MNH-2962, Smithsonian Institution Archives, Record Unit 95, Box 41, Folder: 4, https://siarchives.si.edu/collections/siris_sic_8263 . House model with totem pole in front is on back right of photo in front of house front.Per Robin Wright, Professor and Curator Emerita, University of Washington, 2018, ET14554 and ET24468 may be James Swan collection pieces, based on the similarity of the ET24468 model pole to another model pole, No. E74748, that is linked to Swan and carved by Johnny Kit Elswa, a copy of a chief's frontal pole in Tanu.In James G. Swan correspondence in accession record No. 5260, Swan talks about sending two Haida house models. However, only one was catalogued, # E23547. It is possible house model ET14554/ET24468 or house model ET24565 may be from this accession?

This may be the column described by Swan in his diary entry for Sept. 9, 1883 while Swan stayed in the house of Capt. Skedans at Koona. He wrote "Johnny [Kit Elswa] employed carving a slate stone column and young Kitkun at work carving a wooden column 5 feet long which he holds in his lap and uses chisels and knives cutting towards himself. Both the young men are good carvers." In the accession file for 013804 Swan lists this item as "110 1 large wooden column carved by Kitkune chief of Laskeek. This carving represents the Hooyah or crow in two shapes. The lower one is the crow and halibut. The middle one is Jtltadsda [sp.?], the crows mother, and the upper is the Skamsom or Sparrow hawk."In Swan's second Diary for Sept 9, 1883, he wrote about it saying "Young Kitkun at work carving woden column. 4 feet long. Works with chisels. Holds stick in his lap and cuts towards himself." https://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/digital/collection/pioneerlife/id/21191/rec/103 On Sept 14, 1883 Swan wrote in his diary "Last evening I baught of Young Kitkun a wooden carving 4 ft 3 in long representing a totemic column. Paid him $13.00. Oiled it today with boiled linseed oil. https://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/digital/collection/pioneerlife/id/21191/rec/103
From card: "Woven cedar bark."A label glued on to this object says "David Dan [presumably maker or original owner?], Jackson, Alaska." Jackson is an alternate name for Howkan, Alaska, which is a Haida town. Based on this locality, the object could be Haida rather than Tlingit?Listed on page 51 in "The Exhibits of the Smithsonian Institution at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, California, 1915", in section "Arts of the Northwest Coast Tribes (Tools)".
