Noh Mask3139/12 a-b

Carved wooden Noh mask of “Kawazu”. Painted thin, black moustache and beard, as well as eyebrows and stringy hair. The skin is painted greyish-beige with dark grey teeth. It has small sunken gold and red eyes in deep sockets, and red lips. Its cheeks are hollowed. There is a dark purple cord on the back of the mask attached through small holes at the sides. There are holes carved in the eyes, mouth, and nostrils. The back of the mask is dark red-brown wood stamped with the maker’s mark. Part b is a bag made of yellowish-grey fabric, to hold part a. It is decorated with a floral pattern in pink, black, purple, and blue. The inside of the bag is white fabric with a floral pattern, written on with black ink in Japanese characters. The bag closes with white cloth ties.

Carved wooden Noh mask of "Hatachi-amari". Face has hollowed cheeks and is painted with stringy black hair and eyebrows. The skin is painted yellowish-grey, the teeth are black and yellow, and its lips are red. There is a dark purple cord on the back of the mask attached through small holes at each side. There are holes carved in the eyes, mouth, and nostrils. The backside of the mask is dark brown wood stamped with the maker’s mark. Part b is a dark brown fabric bag for part a, decorated with a pattern of birds and flowers in blue, brown and gold. The inside of the bag is white fabric, written on with black ink in Japanese characters. The bag closes with white cloth ties.

Carved wooden Noh mask of “Kasshiki”. Painted with black hair and bangs, as well as eyebrows. The skin is white and grey, the teeth are black and white, the lips are red. There is a dark purple cord on the back of the mask attached through small holes at the temples. There are holes carved in the eyes, mouth and nostrils. The backside of the mask is dark brown wood stamped with the maker’s mark. Part b is a fabric bag for part a, decorated with a floral and geometric pattern in various shades of blue and gold. The inside of the bag is turquoise fabric, written with black ink in Japanese characters. The bag also has a circular button covered in gold fabric, and a loop for closing.

Carved wooden Noh mask of the sea spirit "Shojo". The face is smiling. There are painted eyebrows and hair. The teeth are grey and the lips red. There is a dark purple cord on the back of the mask attached through small holes at the temples. There are holes carved in the eyes, nostrils, and mouth. The back is dark brown wood stamped with the maker’s mark. Part b is a fabric bag for part a, decorated with silk embroidery in various shades of pink, cream and light bluish-grey. It has a floral pattern and two horizontal stripes. The inside of the bag is white fabric, with written black ink Japanese characters. The white ties on the bag also have black Japanese characters written on them and a small red maker’s mark.

There is a dark purple cord on the back of the mask attached through small holes through the face’s temples. There are holes carved in the eyes, nostrils, and mouth. The back of the mask is dark brown wood stamped with the maker’s mark. Part b is a fabric bag for part a, decorated with embroidery in various shades of pink. The inside of the bag is white fabric, which has been written on with black ink Japanese characters. The white ties on the bag also have black Japanese characters written on them and a small red maker’s mark.

A carved wooden Noh mask of “Uba”. Painted with black and grey hair and very faint eyebrows. The skin is painted yellowish-white and grey, the teeth are dark grey, and the lips are red. The face is carved as heavily lined and frowning with hollowed cheeks. There is a dark purple cord on the back of the mask attached through small holes at the temples. There are holes carved in the eyes, mouth, and nostrils. The back of the mask is dark brown wood stamped with the maker’s mark. Part b is a fabric bag for part a, decorated with a pattern of flowers and geometric diamond shapes, in various shades of green, brown, blue and gold. The inside of the bag is white fabric, with black ink Japanese characters written on the flap. The bag closes with white cloth ties.

The inside is white fabric, written on with black ink Japanese characters. The bag has white ties, and there is a strip of flexible paper tied to one, which is inscribed with Japanese characters.

Screen3139/26

Screen made of patterned silk, fully lined on the back. On front is an image of waves in white and grey, crashing into highly coloured rocks of brown, green, gold and yellow. Seafoam is highlighted with gold and silver speckles and gold outlining. Three sets of long, green and white silk ribbons with gold stamping hang from the top of the screen, attached by yellow cord. Cording also runs horizontally through the fabric at top to allow opening and closing. Long cords in pink, gold, orange, white, purple and green hang from this and down the outside edges of the textile. Backside of screen is a dark yellow and light brown pattern of stylized flowers.

The back of the mask is dark brown wood stamped with the maker’s mark. Part b is a taupe fabric bag for part a, decorated with a floral pattern in orange, yellow, green, pink and white. The inside of the bag is white fabric, written on with black ink Japanese characters. The white ties on the bag also have black Japanese characters written on them and a small red maker’s mark. The bag has white ties, with a strip of flexible paper tied to one which is also inscribed with Japanese characters.
