Carrying CaseN2.966

Red, lacquered, oval-shaped case known as inrō (印籠), with five fitted sections stacked vertically. A purple cord tied at the base is threaded through two channels on either side, holding the five parts together. The fibre cord extends above the top of the box, with the two ends tied together and held in place with a cylindrical green ojime and an amber-like netsuke (根付). Designs featuring insects and flowers are lacquered and inlaid, predominantly in gold and black on the exterior; the interior is speckled red-orange and gold. The amber-like netsuke has two black insects painted on it.

Chopstick RestN2.466 a-q

Part a: doll-shaped with blue glazed detail of kimono and face. Part b: pillow form-shaped (somewhat cylindrical centre that joins two trapezoidal-shaped ends. Part c: brown fish on its side with its tail angled slightly upwards. Part d: clear glazed leaf shape with slightly concave top surface and blue mark. Part e: light blue boat with brown glaze at the prow and on the peak of its roof. Part f: paper crane-shaped with mostly clear glaze, black tail tip and eyes, as well as a reddish-brown oval on top of head. Part g: pillow form shape (rectangular with a foot at each short end, and a curved top surface) with brown-red ends and gold horse on curved top. Part h: grey slug ? on two blades of green and yellow grass and one blade of the grass is bent. Part i: squash-shaped, mostly dark yellow glaze with stem end in green with black swirl pattern and clear glaze with brown-red cross-hatch pattern. Part j: light green pea pod, open with peas displayed. Part k: pillow form shape (rectangular with arched ends and a scooping centre) with blue cross-hatch pattern that surrounds a landscape scene. Part l: a larger half-shell with blue exterior and white interoir, and a smaller full clamshell with a blue, green and brown colouring to its shell. Part m: clear glazed banner? with a partial barrel-shaped segment that has a wood grain pattern, a short protrusion on one side of the barrel shape, and a long protrusion on the other side. Part n: light brown squid with black eyes. Part o: two light brown and green pinecones that meet at their stems. Part p: a light green bird with simplified features and several lines that indicate feathers on wings. Part q: dark brown face with two lobes above large round eyes, and a somewhat pointed chin attached to a curving arm that has a rounded end.

Bobbin winder? Upright tool: three wooden gears to one side with a handle (part c) that turns the bottommost gear. The topmost gear connects to a rotating spoke (part b) with four protruding bars. The bottommost gear connects to a rotating spoke, on which is a white ceramic cylinder with a zig-zag groove at its centre. The groove guides a long, thin arm that protrudes diagonally from the tool. Inscription branded on side of tool, above handle.

Hina doll set. Polychrome figures on tiers covered in red are a set of hina ningyō (雛人形; hina dolls) representing the emperor, empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period. There are five steps. Top tier: two figures sitting on a rectangular platform are dairi bina (内裏雛), representing the emperor and empress with another figure known as inubako (犬筥, “dog box”) to their outside side. Second tier: a seated figure in the middle with a standing figure at either sides and a lamp at each end are three court ladies known as san’nin kanjo (三人官女). Third tier: five seated figures are five male musicians known as gonin bayashi (五人囃子). Three seated figures in the middle hold drums, one seated figure holds a flute and another, a singer holds a fan. Fourth tier: two seated figures are two ministers known as udaijin (右大臣, minister of the right) and sadaijin (左大臣, the minister of the left) with two hishimochi (菱餅; diamond-shaped rice cakes) on hishidai (菱台; diamond-shaped stands) in between. Fifth tier: three seated figures between sakura cherry blossom and tachibana citrus trees are helpers or protectors of the emperor and empress known as shichō (仕丁) consisting of nakijōgo (泣き上戸; crying drinker), okorijōgo (怒り上戸; angry drinker) and waraijōgo (笑い上戸; laughing drinker).

Miniature gateway (tori) with plate bearing inscription on upper cross beam, which has a larger beam on top and a smaller beam on the bottom, between the two of which is the plate bearing inscription. Temple RepresentationN2.972 a-b

A red lacquer model temple (part a) with a roof (part b). The temple (part a) has three sides closed with glass and one shaped arch opening surrounded by a fence along both sides which leave an opening in front of the shaped arch opening and on its opposite side. The roof (part b) tapers upward along all four sides to a smaller square top at the centre. There is a bronze bell at each of the four corners of the roof (part b).

Male figure (part a) painted with samurai costume. His right hand is holding an umbrella (parts b-c) while his left hand is held up behind his head. His upper garment is painted orange decorated with a pattern of three short gold lines, and trimmed with light blue. Overtop is painted a dark blue garment coming across over his right shoulder where a pink flower decorates the garment. The clay umbrella top (part b) is yellow, and dark blue attached to a wooden stick (part c) that goes through a hole in his right hand. Both figure and umbrella have been broken and badly repaired. Figure has a metal post protruding from base of one foot (appears to be missing its original base).
