Shadow Puppet2872/13

A shadow puppet in the shape of a tiger (Hari Mau kulit). The puppet is painted both front and back in brown with black tiger stripes. The mouth is open, showing large bared gold teeth and red gums. The eyes are heavily lidded, and have pronounced lashes. The features of the face- eyes, mouth, nostrils and jaw, are emphasized by close-set piercings through the leather. The figure crouches in a pounce position, with long, splayed gold claws on front and back feet.

Mask2872/7

Mask of a man’s face, with most features and lines carved rather than solely painted. Textured hair has been carved into the top and sides of the mask and painted white. White animal hair, still attached to hide, has been used to create the eyebrows and moustache. Wrinkles have been carved into the face on forehead, cheeks and chin and surrounding the eyes, and have been emphasized with black paint. Under the painted pupils, narrow eyeholes have been bored through the wood. The protruding nose has two nostril holes bored through as well, and there is an air hole through the mouth, between the lips. Two small holes have been bored on each side of the mask at the edges. The interior of the mask is concave.

Mask of a man’s face, with all features carved rather than solely painted. Black wavy hair surrounds a headdress carved with flowers and line patterns, painted bronze. Thick black eyebrows sit above large round eyes with bored eyeholes under the pupils. Below a pronounced forehead crease is a large protruding nose with two nostril holes bored through the wood. The mouth is open to show a row of white teeth and to either side is a curling moustache. Two small holes are bored through the sides of the mask at the edges, and one at the top centre. The interior of the mask is concave and painted brown.

Wooden mask of a woman’s face, with all features carved rather than solely painted. Black wavy hair surrounds a small, intricately carved, floral motif headdress painted bronze. Thin brows sweep over eye holes emphasized with black paint. A wide protruding nose has 2 nostril holes bored through the wood over a wide, thin lipped red mouth, turning down at the edges, open and containing even white teeth. Two holes are bored through the sides of the mask at the edges, and one at the top centre. The interior of the mask is concave and painted brown. Main colours are yellow, black, bronze, red and brown.

Court Cloth2787/23

Court cloth, decorated using batik and tritik stitch resist or "kain kembangan" techniques. An outer brown, black and cream patterned batiked border includes a four petalled flower on each of the four corners.Tiny pulled-stitch bundles and an oblong of repeated white leaf motifs (the result of unstitched tritik bundles) decorate the central burgundy-red panel which is framed with a thin border of white tritik (also known as terikit).

Fragment: Textile2787/17 a-b

Two fragments of silk dyed using plangi and trikit resist techniques. Solid pink and green ground with shapes in purple, yellow, green and pink and smaller white squares, divided into diagonal bands and wedges with white. Each fragment has a seam stitched along one side, with diagonals opposing.

Basketry Motorcycle2744/1 a-c

Three-quarter scale basketry model of a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The front wheel and handlebars (a) are joined to the main body (b) with a rattan peg (c) and can swivel. Motorcycle sits back on a bamboo kickstand and back wheel, leaving front wheel suspended in the air.

A flat gold puppet, with an ornate dress and headdress painted white, green, blue, red and gold, is attached with thread to a long horn rod with central split that goes up height of puppet on both sides.The shoulders and elbows are jointed and a rotatable marionnette stick is attached through the palm of each hand. Feet are joined heel to toe by red strip.
