Rain Cover3396/25

Rain cover or galmo composed of oiled paper folded into a v-shape with accordion folds on either side. The closed pointed end is wrapped with a small piece of oiled paper, and tied with fibre. A length of twisted cord runs from the tip, through the centre of the folded paper, and out the open end. It is tied together to form a loop, with several smaller loops within. The paper opens like an umbrella, and is cone-shaped when open.

DollN3.62 a-b

Doll (a) representing a male figure carved out of wood with articulated shoulders and ankles. His face and hands are painted white with painted black hair, eyebrows, eyes, a drooping moustache and a chin beard. He wears a separate black paper hat (b) with a narrow brim and black silk ribbons that tie in a bow under his chin. A nail at the top of his head helps keep the hat in place. He wears a long sleeveless blue silk vest, gored and pleated under the arms, and fastened with a dingle button over a gored long-sleeved white silk coat fastening with ribbons tied in a single loop. Beneath this are an under-jacket with blue ribbons tied in a single-loop bow and under-trousers. His ankles are wrapped in white material, and he wears pointed shoes made of paper (?) covered with white cloth and painted with black linear and looped designs at the front and back.

Kkokdu (꼭두) figure of a boy/male attendant(?) or dong-ja. Carved from wood and painted. His skin is a light greyish-white. His black hair is tied into two buns on top of his head. He wears a long yellow skirt with a short orange-red top with long green sleeves and burgundy elbow patches. A large green bow is tied at the front. His sleeves are held together in front of his body. Mounted on a wood dowel and base.

She holds her hands down in front of her body. Her face is a light greyish-white, with a large nose, large eyes and small red mouth. Her black hair is tied back into a bun at the nape of the neck. He wears a yellow and blue outfit with an orange-red strap around the chest. He wears a black pointed hat and black shoes. The face is a deep bluish-pink, and he has a simple moustache and goatee. Kkokdu (꼭두) or wooden figure of a woman about to be married (indicated by the four red dots on her face - yeonji-gonji). She wears a long red skirt, with a light orange top with red decorations and neckline. Her legs and black shoes are visible. Her skin is white, and she has four large red dots on her face - forehead, chin and both cheeks. Her earlobes and lips are also red. Her black hair is braided down the length of her back and tied with a red ribbon. Carved from wood and painted. Mounted on a wood dowel and base.
