Summer JacketEd1.314

Woman’s white ramie jacket. The jacket is shorter than waist-length. It opens at the front centre, with the left side lapping over the right when closed. Panels are added to the front edge on each side to extend the overlap. The deep V-neckline is edged on the outside and inside with a facing 5.5 cm. wide, with a rounded corner on the bottom left and a square corner on the right. A short, narrow inside tie is attached to this square corner with a corresponding tie on the left underarm seam. A triangular tab is attached to the place where the facing joins the front edge and this aligns with a square tab on the right side. The lower edge of the garment curves downward to the centre front. There is a centre back seam. The sleeves are inset with a straight seam and joined with another seam between elbow and wrist. The lower edges of the sleeves have convex curves, narrowing towards the wrist. All hems are very narrow.

Skirt391/1 b

Red skirt. The skirt is made of three panels of shiny red damask woven with roundels enclosing a bat motif and stylized character. The skirt is open at the back and lined with red nylon mesh. The panels are pleated and inserted into a band of red shiny fabric with a floral pattern and lined with white nylon mesh. The pleats carry through to the edge of the band on the right side, but not the left. The upper edge of the band is straight with two shoulder straps of orange nylon fabric. At both ends of the band are narrow ties of dark red nylon fabric, roughly machine stitched with white thread.

Fragmentary ornament. Ribbons and stuffed decoration for a waist pouch or glasses case. Consists of a narrow ribbon of dark blue fabric to which are attached three three-dimensional stuffed embroidered fabric triangles and, at the end, four double-sided ribbons of patterned silk gauze in light green, bright green, and dark pink. The stuffed triangles are made of tan, dark blue, and dark pink silk, from the top down. Each is embroidered with different floral motifs, and each has a tuft of silk thread in various colours at each lower corner except for the first, which has only one.

Light brown man’s jacket. The centre opening has front panels that overlap to the right when tied closed with two long thick ties. The outer facings of the v-neck are rounded at the lower edge. The neck is finished with a white collar or facing with crumpled paper inside. The long wide sleeves curve upwards at the wrists. The light brown ties are sewn at the ends of the outer facing and cut with pinking shears creating a zigzag edge. A thinner brown tie is attached to the right inner facing with a corresponding tie on the left underarm seam. There is a centre back seam. The inside lining is unbleached cotton.

Open-top HatEd1.298

Cap of black satin decorated overall with gold stamps. The cap is made of two halves joined at a centre seam from front to back, except for the opening at the top, round when worn. This opening and the forehead area are edged with narrow piping. The edge of the cap is straight across the forehead, but then is cut at a right angle so that it covers the ears. The lower edge forms a circle from the right angle to the top opening. Above the edge of the circle and forehead area are gold stamps shaped like flowers. The outer fabric is folded under at the ears and threaded on a cord. A small area of bright blue satin shows in the lining behind the ears and inside the top opening, but the rest is lined with black and grey cotton fabric. At the back of the top opening is a copper ornament shaped like an inverted heart cast in a lotus design, from which are suspended three tassels, one dark pink, one yellow, and one pink. An identical copper ornament is sewn to the front. Below it is a complex knot design in pink cord, and three tassels, two dark yellow and one dark pink.

Open-top HoodEd1.291

Open-top hood made of dark red silk damask with added ear-flaps of blue silk damask edged and lined with white rabbit fur and filled with grey cotton batting. The red damask is patterned with three roundels, each with two dragons surrounding a Chinese character. The blue damask is patterned with bat ? shapes and a Buddhist swastika. The hood is constructed of two halves sewn together at the centre of the forehead and centre back, but with an opening at the top edged with black piping ending with a short slit at the back. The hood is cut straight across the forehead with two deep scallops edged with black piping on each side. It is edged entirely with two layers of skin with black fur, one facing inside and the other facing outside. A flat red silk cord woven with green and gold geometric designs crosses the opening from front to back, ending at the back in an elaborate knot made of pink and dark blue cord, below which are five red tassels wrapped in gold thread. At the front there an elaborate double knot of gold, pink, and yellow cord, below which are seven red tassels wrapped in gold thread. The hood is lined with bright green felt, and has fragments of paper attached to it with long white running stitches.

Open-top HoodEd1.289

Open-top hood made of purple floral-patterned silk damask with added ear-flaps of fuschia silk damask lined with white rabbit fur, with a loop at the end of one and embossed brass button at the end of the other. The hood is constructed of two halves sewn together at the centre of the forehead and centre back, but with an opening at the top edged with black piping ending with a short slit at the back. The hood is cut straight across the forehead with two deep scallops edged with black piping on each side. It is edged entirely with two layers of skin with black fur, one facing inside and the other facing outside.. A string of coral-coloured beads crosses the opening from front to back, ending in a broken jade disk at the back, below which are seven pink tassels wrapped in silver thread. At the front there an elaborate knot of gold cord, below which is a teardrop shaped piece of jade, below which are nine pink tassels wrapped in silver thread. The hood is lined with dull green cotton flannel.

Child's JacketEd1.336

Short green jacket with floral pattern and striped sleeves. The centre opening has front panels that overlap to the right when closed. Two long thick ties are attached to the lower left facing and to the right of the facing. The left outer facing is rounded at the lower edge, while that on the right is straight and projects beyond the front edge of the garment. The neck is finished with a narrow facing or collar of white fabric. The body has a large gold peony motif repeated on green ground. The long sleeves are inset with seams angled outwards towards the underarms and are made of brocade stripes in six different colours parallel to the body of the garment. The stripes are embellished with woven yellow floral motifs. The seam of the sleeves, under the arms, has a pronounced convex curve, narrowing to the wrist. The inner lining is unbleached cotton.
