Mask3420/54

Mask with trunk-like projection extending forwards from top of the head. Mask built on a wood frame, lined with woven plant fibre. Heavily decorated with cowries and areas of beadwork on forehead and around side. Face has cowrie shell eyes outlined with beads, and a wooden nose and mouth. Bottom edged with plant fibre, which has been split into finer pieces below the face.

Female figure made of wood. Figure is shown kneeling, with her hands placed on her pregnant stomach. The abdomen is marked with a double-line diamond around the naval, and two crosshatched rectangles on both sides of the abdomen and lower back. She has deeply set cowrie-shaped eyes, a large pointed nose, wide lips and a strong cheekbones. She wears a large headdress with a concave top surface and rounded sides. She has bare breasts and pronounced vagina.

King figure (ndop) made of carved ivory. Figure sits cross-legged on a square platform with a drum(?) in front. His eyes are closed, right hand placed on his knee, and he holds a ceremonial knife in his left hand. He wears a distinctive projecting hoe-shaped headdress with carved decoration around the edge and on the top surface. His regalia includes cane shoulder hoops, cloth plaque covering the buttocks, a wrapped belt that crosses over his abdomen, and a plaited belt. He also wears three bracelets, two arm rings and ear ornaments. The figure is mounted on a wood octagonal base.

Box3321/4 a-b

Crescent-shaped box (part a) with lid (part b) made of carved wood. The concave side of the box and centre area of the convex are decorated with three bands of lines, zigzagging in a loosely plaited pattern. The other areas are filled with small repeating triangle patterns. The lid is decorated with squares which switch between horizontal and vertical lines, replicating a woven pattern. Two turtles are carved on either end of the lid.

Cloth3321/6

Rectangular cloth with beige plain weave fabric and cut-pile(?) embroidered geometric designs. The pattern is hexagonal or honeycomb-like, with each hexagon form filled with concentric shapes, and a centre that is either deep red or golden orange colour. The hexagons are outlined and divided by a dark brownish-grey line. Long fringe is knotted around entire cloth in alternating sections of dark brown and yellow-brown fibres. Two large safety pins are attached along one short end on the backside of the cloth.

Helmet Mask3321/7

Mask carved from a single piece of wood. Bulging forehead, prominent nose, and sunken cheeks. Cowrie shells and seedpods outline the face, and are arranged in decorative patterns. The face is covered by pounded copper sheeting with repoussé designs. Continuous lines of black beads extend horizontally across the face, around the eyes, down the bridge of the nose, and around the mouth. A large black beaded trident form on the forehead. The cheekbones and nostrils are heavily beaded in small black and white beads. Goat skin, goat hair, and raffia cloth embellish the top of the head. A woven strip hangs from the chin. The base of the mask is outlined by two rows of cowrie shells, with strings of large reddish-brown seedpods and feathers hanging down.

Female face mask. The face is carved of wood, and painted with sections of triangle designs or slanted lines. Black and white beading extends from the brow line down the ridge of the nose to the chin, with a single cowrie shell between the eyebrows. The lips are outlined in a string of beads in sections of blue and black. Attached to the mask is woven fibre, decorated with strings of cowrie shells and knotted plant fibre. A small raised form, wrapped in woven material, sits on the top of the head, with strings of various coloured beads hanging down from the form, and a cowrie shell at each end.

Friction Oracle Figure3321/11

Animal figure made of wood, with a long, flat, and slightly concave back. The head has carved eyes and ears, and an open mouth; the tail is bushy and turned down. The sides of the body are decorated with carved geometric patterns. A length of twisted plant fibre is tied around the neck and tail, with a small hourglass-shaped piece of wood wrapped in the middle.
