The item search helps you look through the thousands of items on the RRN and find exactly what you’re after. We’ve split the search into two parts, Results, and Search Filters. You’re in the results section right now. You can still perform “Quick searches” from the menu bar, but if you’re new to the RRN, click the Search tab above and use the exploratory search.

FROM CARD: "THIRTY-EIGHT TEETH FROM 1/4 TO 3/8 INCH LONG."
FROM CARD: "ILLUS. IN JAMES SWAN, THE INDIANS OF CAPE FLATTERY, SMITHSONIAN INST., 1869, FIG. 27, P. 43. ILLUS.: HNDBK. N. AMER. IND., VOL. 7, NORTHWEST COAST, FIG. 4, PG. 426."
SI ARCHIVE DISTRIBUTION DOCUMENTS SAY SENT TO MUSEUM D'ETHNOLOGIE, GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, 1889.
HAS ORIGINAL PEALE TAG GLUED ON, NO. 395. WRITTEN ON ONE DENTALIUM SHELL: "CLASSET MR. CALE [HALE?] EX EX".From 19th or early 20th century exhibit label stored with card: "Head-dress - Thirteen strings of shells, Dentalium indianorum, rove through strips of leather 2 ins. long, to preserve band shape. At opposite sides are fastened the ends of a pendant chin-strap made of strings of same shell. Length, 18 ins. Width, 2 ins. N.W. Coast of N. America, 1841, U.S. Explor. Expedition, Capt. Chas. FROM CARD: "BOTTLE.--COVERED WITH BASKET WORK. COILED WEAVING OF WHITE, BLACK, YELLOW, AND BROWN SPRUCE ROOT, BLENDED SO AS TO FORM A PLEASING SYSTEM OF CIRCLES. HEIGHT, 11 INCHES; DIAMETER, 3 1/8 INCHES. MAKAH INDIANS (WAKASHAN STOCK), NEAH BAY, WASHINGTON, 1876. 23,309. COLLECTED BY JAMES G. SWAN."Records in SI Archives of the Office of Distribution say this was sent to E Lovett in GB (Great Britain?) in April 1889. Either this is incorrect (it is still here!) or it was later returned to the museum.
From card: "Wallet like. Made by Makah, sold to Tsihilis (Chehalis) & Chinuks (Chinooks)."Card records locality as Bruseport, Wash. but notes that Bruseport is unknown and that this may possibly be Boistfort. Another more likely possibililty is that this is Bruceport.
