Storage Basket2814/21

Large, round, shallow basket made of thin strips of brown palm, woven into a zigzag pattern. The rim is made up of 7 strips of curved vine, one on top of the other, held on by strips of dark brown palm and ropes of braided fibre running horizontally between the vines, on the outside of the rim. The basket’s sides are firm, while the bottom is pliable.

Large, shallow, circular basket made of thin strips of leaf, woven into a crisscross pattern. The sides are firm, while the bottom is pliable. Attached all around the rim by braided plant fibre and strips of leaf is a curved vine.

Storage Basket2814/17

Large, shallow, round basket made of thin strips of palm woven in a criss-cross pattern. In the interior, parts of the palm have been coloured a dark brown and make diamond and linear patterns in the weave. Six strips of vine circle the inner rim of the basket and are held on by palm fibre. The outside of the basket has a random, possibly unintentional, pattern of lighter fibre intermixed in the weave. The sides of the basket are firrigidm, while the bottom is somewhat flexible.

Blowgun2814/54

Blowgun with long, hollow, cylindrical wooden shaft. The shaft tapers slightly toward the bottom and is completely wrapped in tightly wound palm bark. At the top of the shaft is a rounded protrusion of resin holding what appears to be 2 thin strips of wood(?) that are light orange and white in colour. The hollow mouth piece is carved of wood and flares at both ends. It is smooth and shiny and attached to the shaft with resin.

Shirt2814/52

Long sleeved shirt constructed of thin panels of bark. The tunic has a ‘v’ neck at both front and back, with small slits up the side hems at bottom on each side. There is no front opening. The front and back pieces are separate panels sewn together at sides with thick plant fibre thread. Each arm is a single folded panel with edges sewn together at the bottom, then sewn to the shirt body at the shoulders. The bark has an embedded criss-cross pattern throughout, possibly naturally occurring.

Paddle2814/51

Paddle carved out of a single piece of wood, with a long rounded shaft topped by a wider hand grip. The top of the grip is slightly concave and is indented at bottom. Edges of grip are carved somewhat roughly. The throat of the paddle widens slightly and descends into a wide blade carved in a leaf shape, with small outcroppings on either side close to the top. The blade ends at a tapered tip.

Large loosely woven basket made of thin strips of guarumo palm leaf. Basket is woven in a zigzag pattern and has a hexagon shaped base with flared sides that widen at the rim. The rim is circular and wrapped with dark brown strips of palm.

Nokoro Spirit Mask2814/5

Long, rectangular, brown mask. The sack-like mask is made of tree bark stitched along either side. The top of the mask folds over behind the head and has a dark brown fringe made of bark strips which cascades down the back like hair. Two eyeholes are made at the bottom of the mask, below the face. The face of the mask is a large oval made of dried black resin, painted with white and yellow features and geometric patterns. There are two large semi-circles on the forehead, four concentric circles for the eyes and cheeks, vertical lines decorating the eyebrows and a small semi-circle mouth forming a smile. The face has protruding triangular nose and eyebrows made of balsa wood.

Rattle2814/28

Rattle made from a dark brown gourd with carved designs of square patterns and lines. Gourd is round and long, and tapers towards the top. A thin wooden stick goes through the length of the gourd, forming the handle. Braided palm twine is tied at the top of the handle at the base of the gourd and goes around the rattle, secured in a knot at the top end of the stick. There are two slits made on either side of the gourd, and the rattle is filled with seeds to make noise.
