Bag1201/29

Densely embroidered, multi-coloured, flat, square envelope style bag or purse made by folding and stitching a square piece so that three of its corners meet in the centre, leaving the fourth corner free as a flap. The intricate geometric embroidered designs are worked in silk floss on a cotton textile and are so densely worked that the background textile is almost invisible. In addition to stitchery, the piece is embellished with mirrors and red and black pompoms. The embroidery is backed with blue-green cotton textile.

Wedding Shawl1472/3

Man’s wedding shawl. Made of red and black block-printed cotton textile, heavily embroidered on all four corners with multi-coloured floral designs, abstract representations of peacocks, geometric patterns, mirrors, rickrack and beaded tassels. The designs on the four corners are worked in silk thread and are almost identical to each other, differing only in minor details and colours. Embroidered yellow stripes extend vertically and horizontally across the shawl and intersect at the centre with an embroidered diamond shaped medallion. The block printed designs on the textile form striped borders at each edge, and there is a central rectangle which contains stylized floral patterns arranged in diamond-shaped frames. The block-printed textile is pieced along one long edge (machine stitched) prior to embroidering. The back has a strip of black cotton fabric hand-sewn to each end.

Blouse1201/16

Woman or girl’s multicoloured, short-sleeved, blouse front. Dense, bold geometric motifs, embroidered in silk and cotton thread, cover almost the entire surface of the garment, and in most areas completely hide the ground textile, which is made of dark red cotton. The shoulder area is defined by large floral designs; below the armholes the motifs form an apron effect, with a wide border at the hemline and along the side edges. Mirrorwork, white rickrack and red beaded pompoms are incorporated into the design overall. The centre front neckline slit is decorated with white buttons, triangular turquoise tabs and tie-cords. Tie-cords are also located at the back of the neck and down the centre back opening, which extends from neck to hem. At the back of the shoulders, plain panels of dark red cotton textile are attached. Sleeves are extensions of the shoulder pieces. Sleeve edges and the hem are trimmed with beads, tassels, plastic disks and shells. A label made of off-white cotton textile, printed with a rubber stamp, is attached at the neck edge at the back with a loose running stitch.

Man’s long, narrow, rectangular scarf or sash, heavily embroidered with multicoloured geometric and floral motifs and many mirrors. Arranged along the length of the scarf are sixteen square and rectangular blocks of embroidered designs, consisting of a variety of motifs, many different kinds of stitches and two styles of embroidery (kharek and pakka). The embroidery is so dense that it completely covers the background textile. The blocks of embroidery are separated by black “braid” formed from bundles of black cotton thread which is laid and couched with red thread. There is a border of silver and gold mirrors along all four edges, and the ends are embellished with green and pink beadwork and small red-orange silk tassels. A binding of dark green cotton muslin is machine-stitched along the outside edges. The underlining is pieced from plain and printed cotton and rayon(?) textile in various shades of red.
