Shield2861/1

Large, old, wooden shield, re-painted with an image of a character called "Phantom Man" over most of the front surface. The superhero’s torso is depicted, clothed in a tight purple head cover and shirt that emphasizes his musculature. A blue, black and white belt sits at his waist. Hands and face are white and he wears large black framed, grey lensed glasses. Behind him, the surface of the shield is painted orange through which can be seen decorative perforations in circular and linear designs. "PHANTOM" is written in large red letters across the top of the shield, and above this are vine strips and a few feathers tied around the top edge. The reverse side of the shield is unpainted and has a loop of braided vine attached at the centre, with another attached in two places on the left side. Image colours are orange, purple, red, white, black and blue.

Large contemporary woven string bag (bilum) decorated with dyed stripes, different types of shells, chicken feathers, wooden beads, branches with seeds, small fan-shapes made of cut-up plastic packages, possum jaws, boar tusks and pieces of tapa cloth.

Gable Mask2772/2

Heavy black wood gable mask with only the lower half of the back carved out. Tufts of curly black hair and shells are inset into mounds of black clay(?) at the top of the head, eyebrows, eyes, mouth and sides of the nose. The nose is pierced with a long stick and each ear has twisted brown grass rope earrings knotted into two holes.

Carved dark wood figure, painted with yellow, reddish orange, grayish white and brown pigments, with elongated mask-like face that has spiral shell eyes and wild pig teeth with hanging feathers protruding from its nostrils and spines down its back. On top of the head is an elaborate pointed headdress with mask at front and back, on the shoulders are painted masks, and around the face is a fringe of cassowary feathers imbedded, along with an assortment of small shells, into a base of brown clay. Climbing up the figure's legs from the mounded base with decorative bands of circles is a small alligator.

Sago Storage PotIe502 a-b

Pot made of clay with a face just below the flared rim and a grass ring (part b) that fits around the base of the pot. The face has raised circular eyes, a ridge around the eyes, and a recurved nose. A series of bean-like shapes in white, black and yellow surround the face with a brown background, a raised black wavy line border, and a series of emanating fin-like shapes in black and white outside the raised line.

Model CanoeC848 a-c

Wooden model canoe (parts a-c) with one outrigger. The canoe has an oval-like shape with pointed ends, a rounded bottom and interior. The surface is painted red and black with white on the bow and stern which have small sections of shallow engraving. Across the top of the canoe are six pieces of bamboo that extend out to the pontoon and also support twelve thinner stripes of bamboo that run in opposite direction. The pontoon or float (part b) is cylindrical in shape is black with pointed, tapered ends. Inside of the canoe is a small, carved wooden paddle (part c).

Ancestor Figure2751/1

Tall wood carving of an ancestor figure standing on a mounded base. Covered with carved body tattoos, a mask-like face on each shoulder, a protruding belly, and large genitalia hanging out from behind a bark loin cloth attached to a grass belt, the figure wears an elaborate mask painted in white, red and black pigments. The mask has large cowrie shell eyes, boar tusks sticking out of the nostrils, elaborate earrings, a feather headdress plus fringe of feathers, and is surrounded with a clay border into which are embedded numerous tiny shells.

Square-shaped woven bag (bilum) with long macrame strap of twisted grass rope. Thick strips of dyed red and purple leaf ? alternate with brown to create a diamond pattern. Into the front side are woven bunches of brightly coloured yellow, purple, green and pink grass fibres, the one at top centre being a pompom.
