Carved wood mask consisting of an oval shaped head with long thin strands of sennit ? fibre hanging down the sides and back. The face has a large, protruding forehead with a small crocodile carved in relief. The brow is triangular and hangs over the large round, shell inlaid eyes. The nose is raised, long and narrow with large holes through the septum which hold two pieces of fibre twine. The mouth is small and cut deep. Tattoo-like lines of incised dots run over cheeks. Attached to the sides of the head are small sections of fibre rope with fibre loops. The underside is hollow. There is a fibre tie at the top of the mask. The wood is stained black with a brown pigment over top.

Mask constructed of a ceramic and wood face painted in white, reddish-brown and black with inset cowry shells around the edge and twined plant fibre strung through the ears and nostrils. The back of the mask is formed by strips of split branches lashed together. Tufts of black cassowary feathers adorn the top of the face. A long plant fibre fringe is attached along the lower edge of the mask.

Carved wood drum, cylindrical shape narrowing in centre. Open end in shape of a crocodile with open mouth. Sharp teeth, pointed snout with pointed ridges along back. Eyes outlined in red seed, fibre tie through open nostrils. Centre part has geometric band paintings and handle. Other end has stylized face with red seed eyes. The open end of the drum is covered with snake skin. Drum is painted white, brown, black and light brown.

Tall conical shape, hallow wooden flute. The body tapers at the top where a head is carved in relief. The head has a slightly pointed top, inlaid cowrie shell eyes, long protruding nose with open nostrils, a wide open mouth and large ears. The face is painted brown with white decorative outlines. The body or flute is incised with repeating bands of curvilinear design. It has a large hole in the centre front with a jagged ridge extending from the hole down to the base. Along the ridges are several brown sennit fibre tufts.

Flat oval shape. Face has cut almond shape eye, long straight nose. Cut horizontal slot mouth. Attached hat of fibre made into a mesh, with matted plant fibre (lichen ?) on top. Same material fringed around face mask. One row of black feathers, and one row of red and brown feathers above a row of larger shells, then a band of several rows of smaller shells. White fuzzy fibre on fibre band on forehead. White fibre may have encircled face.

Carved wooden spirit mask in an elongated oval shape. In lower centre is a human face with protruding round eyes, flared nostrils, open mouth with carved teeth and small ears. Covering over the inset face are concentric points meeting vertically from oval background, each one overlapping above and below the face. Four below and six above. Small knobs at both ends; top has a small woven fibre tie.

Painted naked wooden figure with cowrie shell eyes. Figure has corded grass fibre knotted through his ears and nose and around his neck, wrists, ankles, and waist. The top of the figure's head is flat. Standing on a base carved around the feet.

Paddle with a carved serpent's head on the paddle blade, the body of the serpent winding around the shaft, and a pointed humanoid head at the butt end of the handle with round eyes, flared nostrils with plant fibre threaded through them, and an open mouth. The serpent has flat, ovoid eyes outlined in white paint, a pointed nose, and serrated teeth. A border of white triangles is painted at the edges of the paddle. The carving is emphasized by white, dark yellow, reddish-brown and dark brown paint.

Canoe Prow ShieldIe484

Wooden canoe prow shield in a ‘W’ shape with the outer edges lined with cassowary feathers. The shield consists of flat wood pieces mounted onto a bamboo frame. The surface is painted with yellow, orange and brown stylized geometric shapes on a white ground. In the middle is a protruding, elongated shape face with round shell inlaid projecting eyes and a long ridged nose with flaring nostrils. The mouth is open with a slightly protruding tongue. The face is painted in a similar fashion to the rest of the shield. Two bamboo sticks protrude from bottom for support.
