Carved wood drum with an hour glass shape. The sides have two bands of geometric design carved in relief. The bottom section is cut in the form of two triangles and is carved in shallow relief with a stylized design around a central head. The engravings are decorated with white pigment. There is a rectangular shaped handle on the side. Skin drum head bound with split, braided bamboo.

Spear3573/25

Chambri Lakes initiation spear. Top, flat triangular crocodile-like head, with carved and painted semi-circular eyes and a black circle on snout. Plaited twine tied with a loop. Next section is ornately carved with six flowers, with a horn-shape extending from each flower. In between each pair of flowers appears a half flower, with horn-shape extending out into crosshatched fishtail end. Next section uncarved, light brown, with black bands on top and bottom ends, and small tapered carved sections. Next section ornately carved, two flowers, with concentric semicircles extending out. Thin handle wrapped with plaited red-brown twine. Lower section has ancestral face with five barbed pieces, four of which are ornately carved. The base of which is a smooth black.

Skirt3536/5

Small dance skirt(?) with fringe composed of numerous, short thin strips of grass woven into a waistband. Band is made up of twisted fibre; two cords of knotted fibre on each end. Fringe has a repeating stripe pattern of dark purple, dark orange and green.

Headdress3536/4

Cassowary feather headdress consisting of a curved, braided band with twisted ties on either end. Multiple feathers are bound tightly to pieces of reed(?) and the bundles are woven into two layers along the band. Feathers at front are red-brown and black; back feathers are a mix of white and light brown. Additional layer of bound reeds woven along back of band.

Two braided straps extend from the top corners on either side of the basket; straps knotted together at their ends, forming a handle. Knot creates short fringe at top centre of handle.

Breast Ornament3536/3

Irregularly-shaped diamond breast ornament; made out of plant fibre. Surface is covered in small cowrie shells; horizontal diamond-like opening in centre of ornament, showing fibre beneath. Shells surrounding opening are woven into a star-like pattern; rest of shells are attached in straight lines. Nine egg cowrie shells hang from both sides of the ornament (18 total). Pendant made of two tusks, forming a circle, hangs from a twisted fibre cord at the bottom; loop cord at top of ornament. Back of ornament is undecorated. (Also 1 extra, loose egg cowrie shell with stick attachments.)

Carving3532/5 a-b

Carving of a female figure standing on an oval-like base (part a). She stands with her feet shoulder width apart, hands at her hips; depicted wearing a grass skirt and assorted jewellery made of twisted fibre and circular shells(?). Her face has linear and curvilinear designs painted across it in white; eyes are inset cowrie shells. Hair is black, with a white band painted underneath. Large hornbill sitting on top of woman’s head; neck is extended with head tilted back. Head and neck of hornbill are yellow, rest of body is black; eyes are inset cowrie shells. A crocodile, balanced on its tail, supports the back of the female figure; painted black. Two snakes stretch from her shoulders and have their heads resting against the base; done in black with white and orange stripes. All animals have intricately carved features; hornbill has additional curvilinear designs. Top of base is a light orange; sides have a channel carved into them, with ovals carved in relief throughout. Donor tag attached to snake on right side of base. (Left wing has broken off hornbill, part b.)
